Discovering empathy in the numbers
User experience design is about audience and their purpose. Who are the people you want to attract? What motivates them act? What do they find useful, usable, and desirable?
At Deepend, we believe great design can only be achieved by teams capable of empathising with the people they are designing for. The role of the UX designer is to lead this exploration, test ideas, prototype approaches, and maintain a user-centred ethos throughout the lifespan of a project.
We recently created a prototype for the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network that helped chronically ill patients and their carers to better manage their day-to-day medical needs. Through extensive interviews and client workshops, we gained an in-depth understanding of how staff, patients and carers interact. From these insights, we were able to design a connected application that enabled clearer communication and a greater depth of insight into the ongoing patient needs.
Our research revealed the majority of patients use Android devices, so the My Health Memory app uses Google’s Material Design to ensure users are immediately familiar with the app’s navigation and structure.
Key medications, specialist appointments and regularly scheduled treatments are surfaced by the app as required by the patient, with more in-depth information and treatment history available within a few swipes of the menu.
Most importantly, the My Health Memory app was designed and tested in collaboration with end users, ensuring the product was meaningful and valued by those using it on a daily basis.
Core to this initial engagement with SCHN was our UX Design Audit, the perfect first step in understanding and shaping a structured response to improving their customer engagement.
