Building a practical AI app for NSW Government
Deepend built a secure AI-enabled document intelligence app for NSW Government to help internal teams access, generate and maintain reliable information more efficiently.
Client: NSW Government
Industry: Government, Public Sector, AI, Digital Transformation
Services: AI Systems & Agent Applications, Intelligent Platforms, Digital Product Development, Cloud & Data Infrastructure, Human & Machine Experience Design
Overview
Deepend helped develop an AI-powered application for NSW Government, designed to streamline working with internal documents, reduce repetitive tasks and improve the accuracy. Built with a modern set of web technologies including Next.js, Node.js and Azure AI services, the engagement shows how AI can create real operational gains with the right use case.
The challenge
Like private businesses, government teams need accurate internal documentation to make decisions, respond to requests, and maintain public-facing consistency. But documentation can be time-consuming to create, difficult to keep current and hard to search when information is spread across multiple sources.
The opportunity
The opportunity was to leverage Generative AI to streamline the way internal teams work with documents - helping staff work faster, automate repetitive tasks, reduce manual errors, and improve confidence in the information they use every day.
AI can create a material difference in operations when it is applied with secure foundations and a clear understanding of the target human workflow. For this project, the value sat in document access, document generation, and internal knowledge retrieval.
By combining a responsive chat UI with AI services through Azure, Deepend helped create a practical tool that makes information easier to find, easier to maintain and easier to trust.
Our Approach
Deepend focused on a useful first implementation: a secure AI-enabled app that could support internal teams with document intelligence and information access. The approach balanced speed, usability, security, and future scalability.
Technical Integration
The work brought together front-end experience design, cloud architecture, AI service integration, and disciplined delivery. The result was a platform that could prove value quickly while creating foundations for future capability.
What We Delivered
- AI-powered internal document assistant
- A dynamic chat-style user interface
- Next.js front-end experience
- Node.js server-side application layer
- Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui interface components
- Azure hosting and cloud service foundations
- Azure Cosmos DB for scalable, predictable data storage
- Use of Azure AI services including AI Search and Document Intelligence

Improved information consistency
Standardized document creation helps lower the risk of errors and rework.
Faster access to internal knowledge
A chat-style interface helps staff find relevant information more easily.
Stronger foundations for future AI capability
Azure services created a scalable base for further document intelligence and workflow automation
Problem & Insight
This engagement began with a practical operational problem: how to help NSW government teams manage internal information with greater speed, accuracy, and confidence.
Internal documentation affects more than back-office efficiency. When teams can rely on reliable, current information, they are better equipped to provide clear and consistent responses to the public.
The key insight:
small, innocuous seeming improvements can build confidence over time and create meaningful operational change.
Strategy & Experience Design
The experience needed to be simple and familiar enough for everyday use and structured enough to support complex government workflows.
Deepend helped shape a chat-style interface that makes document access feel familiar and responsive. Staff could ask questions, locate information, and work with internal content through a more direct experience.
The design direction focused on clarity, consistency, and usability. Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui supported a modern interface system that could be extended as the product evolved.
Technology & Delivery
The application was built with Next.js for a responsive front-end experience and Node.js as the back end. This provided a strong, modern technology foundation enabling real-time interaction, efficient data handling without limiting future iteration.
Azure provides a secure cloud environment. Azure Cosmos DB supports scalable data storage with options for provisioned, serverless or auto scale operations, helping the platform adapt as usage changes.
The solution also drew on Azure AI services, including Document Intelligence and AI Search, to support document generation, retrieval and internal knowledge discovery.
Results
The project demonstrated that AI can improve day-to-day government operations when it is connected to a clear workflow and supported by strong technical foundations.
The live case study reports staff benefits including reduced time spent on manual documentation, more consistent internal documents and improved confidence in accessing information. These are meaningful signals for future AI use across public sector operations.
The project also clarified important implementation lessons. AI is not a quick fix. It requires strong governance, realistic expectations, the right tools, secure data management, and a clear view of where it can create the most value.
Key Learnings
Start with the workflow, not the technology:
The most successful AI applications solve a narrow, defined problem.
Build the non-technical foundations first:
Clear processes, team readiness and simple goals make AI implementation more effective.
Architecture & Security
Choose tools for the job:
There is no single AI tool for every need. The right architecture should solve the current problem and support the roadmap.
Prioritise data governance and security:
AI can be deployed widely with confidence with the right data quality, privacy, access control and compliance.
Summary
This project shows how focused AI implementation can improve government operations without unnecessary complexity. By targeting internal documentation and knowledge access, Deepend helped create a useful application that increases efficiency, information accuracy and access.
The work reflects Deepend’s approach to building customer-led technology: clear strategy, considered design, trusted delivery and practical impact.
