Sound Storm Wins at the 2024 Australian Good Design Awards

On Friday, 20 September 2024, the winners of Australia’s most prestigious international design awards were announced at the Australian Good Design Awards. The ceremony, held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Sydney, brought together over 1,000 leaders from the design, architecture, engineering, and business sectors to celebrate excellence in design and innovation.
Deepend Group is proud to announce that Sound Storm received three major honours at this year’s awards, reinforcing its impact as a breakthrough solution in digital health and remediation for children.
About Sound Storm
Sound Storm is a deficit-specific remediation application and clinician monitoring program designed for school-aged children with Spatial Processing Disorder (SPD). SPD is a form of Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD), which affects a child’s ability to understand speech in noisy environments. This condition can significantly impact learning and social interaction, making early detection and intervention crucial.
Developed by Harvey Dylan and Sharon Cowan, Sound Storm combines clinical expertise with user-focused design to provide an accessible and effective remediation tool. Deepend had the privilege of bringing this innovative application to life, ensuring it is both clinically robust and digitally intuitive.
Recognition at the Good Design Awards
The 2024 Australian Good Design Awards celebrated the theme “The Design Effect,” highlighting the influence of design in building better products, services, and systems that shape a more sustainable and inclusive future.
Sound Storm stood out among the entries, earning recognition across three categories:
-
GOLD in Product Design (Medical and Scientific)
-
GOLD in Digital Design (Apps and Software)
-
PLATINUM in Digital Design (Apps and Software)
These accolades reflect Sound Storm’s excellence not only as a functional medical tool but also as a well-designed digital product that balances usability, clinical effectiveness, and long-term social impact.
Why These Awards Matter
The Australian Good Design Awards are the nation’s longest-running international design awards, with a history that stretches back to 1958 under the Industrial Design Council of Australia (IDCA). They remain the benchmark for design innovation, recognising work that improves quality of life, enhances business outcomes, and drives sustainability.
For Deepend, the recognition of Sound Storm highlights the power of collaboration between clinical specialists, technologists, and designers. The awards demonstrate how design-led thinking can create tools that make a real difference in people’s lives, especially children facing challenges with communication and learning.
Acknowledging the Team
These awards would not have been possible without the dedication of Sound Storm’s creators, Harvey Dylan and Sharon Cowan, whose vision and expertise guided the project from research through to implementation. Deepend is grateful for the opportunity to partner with them in building a platform that has the potential to transform children’s learning journeys.
Looking Ahead
Sound Storm’s recognition at the 2024 Good Design Awards is more than an industry accolade. It is a testament to the importance of human-centred design in solving real-world health and education challenges. As Deepend continues to work at the intersection of technology, design, and social impact, we remain committed to supporting projects that change lives through thoughtful and effective digital innovation.
